Happy Monday everybody! Yes it's Monday and you probably feel like this...
so here's some Monday motivation for you all...
Whether you're at school/work after a relaxing weekend, about to start/head back to uni or you're just chilling because, you know, you can... then kick start the week on a positive note! School, yes lots of work but also lots of fun memories with your friends to make that, I promise, you'll treasure forever! Work, yes stressful but also a way for you to keep busy and be doing something worthwhile with your time! I really value those people who drag themselves out of bed everyday to go to work because no matter what job you are doing you are giving to society and society needs people like you so keep doing what you're doing, we love you for it! And for those of you about to start or head back to uni then keep reading because I have a bucket load of advice for you!!!
I've always been the weird one who absolutely loved going to school and was definitely the one counting down the days for the summer holidays to end. And that hasn't changed at all as I am so damn excited for the new term to start at uni (which is officially today for Royal Holloway students whoop whoop!). As much as I have loved having 3 months off (benefits of being a university student I suppose) the last couple of weeks have been a drag and I can't wait to get back into the routine of being at uni! Waking up 20 minutes before a lecture, chugging a litre of coffee, forgetting to shower for the 3rd day in a row and grabbing your pillow for that nap you dreamed of halfway through the lecture... ahh yes the sweet smell of freedom. I am totally kidding! For one, that wasn't me in first year (apart from the coffee) although, trust me, THAT scenario is more common than you think. And secondly, even if it was me in first year I am definitely not lazing about this year!
Things are getting serious and intense, the prospect of a full time job is looming. Am I nervous? Heck yeah! But I am so excited too! Coming to uni was the best decision of my life so far and I have already learnt so much! I have learnt more about myself in the first year of uni than I ever did in my teenage years (which btw is sadly coming to an end this Saturday as I turn 20 *cries*). I have also learnt so much about what I want from life and although I'm someone that doesn't have a distinct career in mind at this point I know that it will be okay and I'll find my feet when I am ready. So right now I am just enjoying all the opportunities coming at me and seeing where life takes me and that's what's exciting! That is what is so great about uni - you have the chance to be whatever you want, when you want and you learn not to care what others think about you and what others tell you!
So for those of you starting uni today or in the next few weeks, or for those who have already started, here is my advice: hit the ground running. Take all the opportunities you get (don't do drugs) and if you find yourself changing your mind don't panic - now is the time for you to do just that! If you want to change course, change uni's, leave uni or even leave the country and the opportunity is there then do it! If you really feel it and really want it then there is nothing stopping you!
I found it really hard in my first year to come to terms with this and at points I thought 'have I made the wrong decision' just because I realised that I loved psychology but didn't know what career I wanted. It's hard because the first thing everybody asks is 'what do you want to do when you finish uni?'. My answer was 'I'm not sure I've come to uni to find out' and everybody else would be like 'forensic psychologist', 'developmental researcher', 'neurosurgeon' etc etc. AGHHH. My mind was overwhelmed but I got some really good advice from my personal tutor who said to just go with it and that's what I've done. No I'm not worried that I don't know what I want to do yet but instead I'm giving myself experiences in everything to find where I fit in!
That said, if you have a career and a passion in mind... go for it! Uni gives you all the experiences and opportunities you need to make it happen. Get work experience, volunteer in your department, get some social skills and get going! The next three years (and more for those of you looking for further studies) are your oyster!
All in all, don't take yourself too seriously (my mistake in first year), don't follow the crowd, do what you want and enjoy it! Your independence starts from here and you need to make your own choices and your own mistakes but uni is the place to do it so embrace it.
I hope this has helped some of you with starting uni or maybe you just read this and can apply it to your own personal situation and it helps! I totally accept that for some of you this has just messed with your mind even more and I apologise in advance for that... sorry!
Enjoy your Monday and your week!
